CIBER Undergraduate Programs

Speaking Business Series

In Spring 2005, Penn Lauder CIBER co-sponsored in collaboration with the Center for East Asian Studies, East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department (EALC), and the Penn Language Center, the Speaking Business Series with a panel comprised of Wharton MBA students. At the panel, the three presenters described their experiences in doing business in China, Japan, and Korea and spoke of how their language skills gave them an invaluable advantage when conducting business overseas. The panelists encouraged the undergraduate student audience to continue to optimize their language study as preparation for entering today's global workplace.

This program is currently being adapted to middle and high school students in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania's MAGPI Internet2 videoconferencing system. It is geared to give middle and secondary school students real-life examples of how second language skills provide a competitive edge in the business world.

The Speaking Business Series is offered twice a year, focusing on different regions of study, such as Western Europe, the Middle East, Slavic regions, and Latin America. For further information, please contact Betty Slowinski, Coordinator, Languages for Business and Professional Purposes, at the Penn Language Center.
